What the notation means · or point at any symbol
NNatural numbers
The natural numbers 0, 1, 2, …. In Lean they start at 0. (ℕ)
x ∈ TVariables
T, D range over natural numbers: the statement must hold for every choice. ((T D : ℕ))
Fin
Fin: a definition from the library, not special notation. Its name is its meaning; open it in Lean to see how it is defined. (Fin)
f(x)Function application
Fin applied to T. Lean writes f x; papers write f(x). (Fin T)
∀For all
The statement after the comma holds for every i. (∀ i, ∑ j, P i j = 1)
∑Summation
Add up P(i, j) for every j. (∑ j, P i j)
=Equality
∑ j, P(i, j) and 1 are the same. (∑ j, P i j = 1)
⟹Implies
If Fin(T), then ℝ. (Between types, A → B is the type of functions from A to B.) (Fin T → ℝ)
·Multiplication
P(i, j) times dO(i, c). (P i j * dO i c)
RReal numbers
The real numbers: every point on the number line. (ℝ)

With dVⱼ = Σᵢ Pᵢⱼ·dOᵢ and unit row sums, the key-side value gradient summed over keys equals the upstream output gradient summed over queries. That is one reduction on each side. In the experiment it is the only checksum that isolates a corrupted dO copy inside the key-backward kernel (Baguette's packed-transpose bug). Part of 'Noether checksums for Baguette's backward kernels'.
